Getting to Know Canasta Rules
Canasta is a popular card game which is believed to have originated Uruguay, but popularized greatly in Agrentina. Original Canasta, or Classic Canasta, is somewhat a variant of the popular Rummy game and is commonly played by four to six players, in pairs, using 2 standard 52-card decks.
Canasta rules generally call for four to six players – you may either play for yourself or in twos (although this is only applicable in four to six player games). The two decks of cards include the four jokers and these, together with the deuces (or twos) are the “wild cards”.
The first agenda of the game is to deal out 11 cards to each player. The rest of the pile is placed in the center of the table and the top card turned over to form a discard pile. The discard pile should not begin with a three or a wild card.
The goal of the game is for the player to be able to constructs melds of 7 cards of the same rank. Each player’s turn is comprised of picking up a card from the stack, and discarding another one from their hand onto the discard pile.
Canasta rules operate on a point system and a player’s first meld must meet a certain initial meld requirement, which based on the player/teams total score.
Canasta is no longer a game of the old- now you can enjoy playing online and registration and fees are either free or minimal.
